February 2010

Greetings from sunny Guatemala. This past month has been filled with wonderful
moments. So, grab a cup of coffee and sit back and enjoy the ride.

Pamela hired our new House Director the last day of January. Daisy Cruz is a 41-year-old single woman with a heart to serve. She spent a few years as a missionary with YWAM and has come on board with some great ideas and a lot of energy. Her abilities to organize and keep inventory have been a great help.

We also received Mariela and her 2-year-old son this month. She was the breadwinner in this relationship. Her boyfriend didn't seem to mind beating her each time she received her paycheck. Mariela's parents go to church with Pamela and they were finally able to convince her that there was more to life than what she was getting.

Leah's school (CAG) has Servant Days each year at this time. The 8th grade class decided to spend the day at El Refuio as their service project. They spent the day painting four rooms and scrubbing all the walls that have an oil based paint. They also washed all the windows and cleaned up the property by raking and repotting some new and old plants. The ladies prepared lunch for everyone. It was a great day.

Sandra was able to begin classes thanks to one of our supporters. She is doing very well and has passed, pretty easily, each of her exams so far. the only problem has been the need for a computer, since all of her papers have to be typed. So far Pamela has been sharing her laptop with Sandra so that her homework can be completed. We have feelers out here in Guatemala and are praying that a lead will come through soon with a computer for the shelter.

Sandra and Olga

Sandra has also been helping Olga work on her reading and writing. Olga has been improving in almost every area, almost daily. She is 7+ months pregnant and we are still trying to get her documents from her previous residence, which hasn't been easy. Pamela has been working with the court system to get things resolved before the baby is born.

This month also brought about the return of Nydia, our former Counselor. She has been spending important time with each of the ladies. helping them to understand their past and to find a way to move forward.

Rachel (Leah's shadow teacher) has also been volunteering two days a week at El Refugio. She is teaching three of the ladies English. I think they are having too much fun, but they all seem to be learning with smiles. It's been great having her spend time with the ladies, helping me when my Spanish comes up short.

Rachel

Through it all, we are thankful for partners like you. We appreciate all your financial and prayer support. Please pray with us as we seek wisdom for our future. Our personal support has been down and if things don't begin to turn around we will need to begin making plans to move back to the states. We trust the Lord who along can fill andy financial void.

Blessings,

Chris
