April, 2010

Greetings from Guatemala where the sun continues to keep things very warm, though April has brought some early rains. We don’t normally see the rains until the end of May; the spring-like feel to the weather has been a treat.

We have some wonderful news to share with you! Olga gave birth to a healthy, beautiful little girl on Good Friday. She named her after both our house and executive directors ~ Deysi Pamela. Olga has been receiving some great advice from Gini, a nurse/midwife who has been seeing Olga since her third trimester. Olga is learning that it’s important to feed her baby more than just 3-4 times a day. Thankfully, baby Pamela is beginning to thrive with the additional feedings..

This month also brought a new volunteer, Silvia, who has more talents than we know what to do with.

At this time, she is teaching some of the ladies how to sew, which we are hoping will translate into the making of typical aprons. We would like to add them to our little store located on the second floor of the shelter.

Hilda and her three sons entered the shelter a few weeks ago. Two of the boys, ages 5 and 8, have been enrolled in the public school near the shelter where they will be able to continue in their studies. We are very thankful for the financial gifts that came in for the shelter recently, which allowed us to purchase the necessary school supplies and clothing for the boys.

We were also blessed by two couples who came to Guatemala on a Vision Trip: Jeff and Michelle, and John and Angie, from Wellspring Church in Hartford, Wisconsin.

They painted two rooms in El Refugio and then enjoyed a wonderfully prepared lunch of Pepian and time to spend with the ladies and kids in the shelter.

The two couples also met some of the leaders and kids in El Cortijo-Palin where Mike and Dr. Erick are working on a health/development project. They were able to witness payday for the Health Promoters, who receive such basic foods as rice, maseca, beans, pasta and cereal at the end of each month. The couples also did the road trip to Salquil Grande with Mike, where they visited Light and Life School and other properties

On the fun side, they had a day at the beach and some shopping time in Antigua.

Mike and I are very excited by their purchases of shelter-made coffee jewelry, which they are planning to show to coffee shops and friends back home. We are trying to figure out how to move forward with selling the jewelry stateside.

Please join us in prayer as we seek avenues to grow this micro-enterprise.

Rafa

We continue to give thanks for all the work that is being accomplished. God is so good and faithful. Please pray about how you might be able to get more involved with the work that is going on here.

In His Service,

Mike and Chris
