May, 2010

This month was full of God moments at El Refugio. It started with a visit from Stacy and Linda, who came from Seattle Union Gospel Mission to oversee our program. They spent the week living and working with the ladies and staff at El Refugio. It was a wonderful opportunity for us to have professionals who are running a successful program in their shelter review what we are doing. We are happy to report that they see great things happening within our doors.

This month also brought about moments of great blessing. Beverly, who is involved with the Amigos group at the U. S. Embassy, blessed us by helping to include the coffee jewelry at their Mothers Day Bazaar this year. Yolanda, a woman from our local church, decided she wanted to be a blessing and held a party in which all gifts given were to go to El Refugio. The ladies received these gifts on Mothers Day, which brought a few of the ladies to tears with the generosity that was shown by strangers.

The day after Mothers Day, Pamela and Rosita were invited to speak at another church (El Camino) regarding the abuse of women in Guatemala. This was the first time that Rosita shared her testimony, which proved to be a tearful time for many.

The blessing continued when they were allowed to sell some of their coffee jewelry afterwards.

We also welcomed Karla into the shelter this month. Karla is 41 and has been in an abusive marriage for more years than she can remember. Her children are now all grown and her need to be a punching bag is over. She shared with us that if she would have known of El Refugio years earlier she would have left him sooner.

In addition, we received a new volunteer this month. Claudia is now coming once a week to hold a discipleship class with the ladies.

On a more challenging note, El Refugio is overflowing. In the month of May, we have turned away 14 women in need of shelter. Turning away someone in need, usually with children in tow, is a heartbreaking thing to do. We are in need of a larger facility which means we are in need of additional funding. Please keep this in your prayers.

Through it all, we continue to give God the glory for the great things He has done. We would like to encourage you to explore our website: www.weavinghopeministry.org to see more photos of things that are happening at El Refugio as well as updates on our other ministry outreaches.

We will be in Wisconsin this summer and would love to meet with as many of you as possible. Please drop us a note and let us know when you might be available. We would love to share with each of you face to face.
